Somewhere along the way, scrum became the default. You say “agile” and people hear “two-week sprints, daily standups, sprint planning, retros, a scrum master, and a Jira board.” That’s not what the manifesto said.
The agile manifesto is four values and twelve principles. None of them mention sprints. None of them mention story points. None of them mention a certified scrum master.
Scrum is one implementation of agile principles. It’s a fine starting point. But most teams treat it as the destination. They follow every ceremony religiously and wonder why they still feel slow. They’re doing scrum perfectly and shipping terribly.
The irony is hard to miss. Agile was a reaction to rigid, process-heavy development. Scrum became its own rigid process. Teams are afraid to skip a retro even when there’s nothing to discuss. Sprint planning takes half a day because that’s what the guide says.
I’ve seen teams get faster by dropping half their ceremonies and keeping the principles. Ship small. Get feedback. Adjust. You don’t need a two-day certification to do that.
If your process feels heavy, it’s probably not agile anymore. Regardless of what you call it.
